Commonwealth commends power-sharing deal

Commonwealth secretary General Don McKinnon has commended President Mwai Kibaki and DN leader Raila Odinga for striking a power sharing deal and end the country’s political stalemate. MacKinnon says the signing of the deal by the two leaders shows a new beginning for Kenya and urged political leaders to maintain the spirit of co-operation and implement the agreement He also called on the leaders to be committed to the process of national healing and reconciliation in order to return the country to its political stability and economic growth with speed. McKinnon stated that the Commonwealth is ready to assist the Kenyan Authorities to implement the reform agenda reached in the agreement. The agreement provides a fifty-fifty power sharing between the two feuding parties and will be backed by relevant amendments to the constitution.
