Kenya-Sudan border blocked by war veterans
Sudanese War Veterans have closed the Sudan-Kenya border at Lokichoggio to protest a seven month delay in payment of their monthly compensation. Confirming the closure Lokichoggio District Officer Geoffery Wafula said the blockade set up by the war veterans had paralyzed transport and movement of commuters along the Lokichoggio-Juba highway since last week. According to Wafula, the war veterans who were involved in the decades-long armed conflict in the liberation struggle in Southern Sudan had virtually taken over operations in the southern parts of the country to demand for their unpaid dues and tokens from the Khartoum government. He noted that efforts by the Kenyan authorities and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army to deliberate with the group to lay down arms and open the border have failed. The DO however confirmed that a high powered delegation from Sudan would meet with their Kenyan counterparts today at Lokichoggio to iron out the matter.
