Mt. Elgon compensation faced with corruption claims.
Mount Elgon District Commissioner Mohammed Birik says that money set aside for compensation of internally displaced Persons will be used entirely for that purpose. The administrator sought to dispel fears that the 40 million shillings disbursed for that purpose would not reach the families. He however says that only families whose property was destroyed by the Sabaot Land Defense Force would benefit from the funds and not those who fled the district. Birik adds that all the 4260 families are genuine cases to consider while distributing the money. His comments come against a backdrop of allegations by area legislator Fred Kapondi that local administrators were including their relatives in the compensation.
