Certified wheat seeds set to be available come the next planting season
Farmers can now rest assured that they will access certified wheat seeds come next year unlike in the past planting seasons. North Rift region Kenya farmers’ association manager David Kosgey says the Kenya seed company has begun storing certified wheat seeds in readiness for next year’s planting season. Kosgey added that the Kenya cereals board is in a process of buying wheat from farmers as directed by the minister for agriculture William Ruto in a bid to help curb food insecurity in the country. Concerning maize production Kosgey said the purchasing price of 1,700 sh per bag set by the ministry of agriculture is not sufficient noting that some farmers have opted to sell their produce to other buyers at a better price. However the manager is now calling on farmers to prepare farms early in preparation of next season’s cultivation.
