Tackling illiteracy solution to FGM
Illiteracy among communities living in the Rift valley province has been termed as the main motivation behind the ongoing female genital mutilation.
And As Fish FM’s Caroline Koech reports, many of the victims of the outdated practice lack awareness.
Mariam Suleiman, the chairperson of the women for peace initiative says many of those still practicing in the FGM are not aware of the possible dangers or even its illegality.
Mariam notes that chiefs are still colluding with locals especially parents of young girls in areas where FGM is widely practiced.
She stated that a spirited campaign to sensitize the locals against the practice is expected to begin in May especially in places most prone to the out dated practice. Mariam however says they have not been able to reach some parts of the Rift valley province due to cases of insecurity.
