Raila backs Mau Mau compensation

During the Prime Minister’s session to answer questions from members of parliament Wednesday, Members asked what the government is doing to compensate Mau Mau freedom fighters.

In his reply the Premier observed that the questions fell in to three categories of compensation, apology and documentation.

Raila says the Mau Mau issue was first discussed extensively in the 60’s which led to the split of the national movement following the sensitive nature of land. The PM however noted that he supports the idea that the Mau Mau heroes should be compensated and rewarded.

Raila cited the Japanese government which apologized to the Chinese for atrocities during the Nazi period saying that the Mau Mau demand for an apology is no exception. He’s promised to forward the matter to cabinet for consideration. On the maize scandal the Prime Minister stated that the alleged contaminated maize did not infiltrate into the market urging members not to politicize the matter.

He added that all due process was followed to bring in 5 million bags of maize with the blessing of government.

Meanwhile Raila says the government is going to treat the Migingo dispute diplomatically for the sake of harmonious existence.
