The ownership of the Migingo Island on Lake Victoria as contested by Kenya and Uganda questions the existence of the East African Community. Friday Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni called a press conference to deny that he was referring to Mingingo but instead said he was talking about Suba Island. He was quoted as saying that Migingo Island is Kenya’s but the waters belong to Uganda. The leader demanded an apology for the uprooting of the railway line by angry youths saying it caused his country numerous losses. At the conference, Museveni said the dispute should be resolved amicably ruling out that it will hinder the East African Community spirit. According to colonial maps Museveni said it clearly showed where the part of the island the belonged to Uganda and Kenya.
Surveyors have set out to verify the ownership of the island in an exercise to be funded by the two governments.
