Local government funds accounts committee meets with the local authorities
The local government funds accounts committee has embarked on a countrywide mission to meet with local authorities’ chief executive officers to share with them what is expected of them when they are summoned to appear before the committee to give their financial audit.
Speaking in Eldoret during their tour to the Eldoret municipal council, the local government funds accounts committee’s chairman Thomas Mwadego stated that many of the local authorities’ auditors have no proper records of their finances.
Mwadego said that their aim is to help the local authorities in the country to be competent and accountable when carrying out their duties.
He however stated that the ministry of local government is addressing the issue of inadequate and untrained staff, and noted that in cases where there are cases of corruption and contravening of the law, the committee has the powers to recommend prosecution.
The 11 member committee was curved out of the public accounts committee formed by the parliament to effectively improve accountability in the country’s local authorities.
