Electoral reforms needed in Kenya

There are more calls for reforms to be made in the electoral system of this country, Leaders from the Africa Peace Forum have said.

The leaders who were meeting with members of the public from different ethnic background at the Eldoret town hall said poor electoral systems led to the post election violence that rocked the country early last year.

The leaders sought to find out reforms to be made that will help future elections to be held peacefully.

Speaking during the meeting held in Eldoret, the coordinator of the project dubbed “a peoples voice on the electoral reform agenda” George Kabunga said the reforms that are expected to be done are aimed at minimizing possibilities of another conflict in future.

Kabunga revealed that they are going to partner with peace building organizations in Eldoret town to create a stronger union that will be able to confront politicians, members of Kenya law reforms and inter religious council as they present their findings on the causes of last years conflict that needs to be dealt with.

They held the one day meeting in Eldoret considering that it was one of the towns that was badly affected by the post election violence.

Hawkers markets in Eldoret to be in used soon

Hawkers in Eldoret can now rest assured that the two hawkers markets have now been completed in Eldoret to serve them after they were removed from the streets by the municipal council.

According to the Eldoret municipal council mayor William Ronoh, the two markets in Kahoya estate and the town hawkers markets are set to be opened next month by local government minister Musalia Mudavadi

Mayor Ronoh added that the market will serve all hawkers irrespective of their tribes.

On fire fighters he stated that the council will soon receive an estimated 40 million shillings fire track from Minneapolis city council in the US, to help fight fire incidents, adding they have already sent 1.8 million shillings for transport.

The mayor further stated that plans are underway to put up 3 more fire stations in Eldoret.

Seminar for proper implementation of the ‘kazi kwa vijana’ initiative

District and divisional youth officers from Rift Valley province have been urged to be transparent and efficient in the implementation of the kazi kwa vijana initiative programme Addressing the officers at the Eldoret town hall, Rift Valley Provincial Director of youth affairs Party Mulimu asked the officers to shun corrupt dealings in the implementation of the project and to take time to brief them on the ministries involved, objectives of the project and the role of each member towards making the project a success. The kazi kwa Vijana initiative programme in Eldoret has received twenty four million one hundred and twenty thousand shillings (24, 120,000) from the government and is intending to create 200,000-300,000 job opportunities for the youth. The one day workshop was aimed at educating the district and divisional youth officers from Rift Valley province on ways of improving and sustaining the ongoing kazi kwa vijana initiative programme. Present at the meeting was the Eldoret East youth officer Jackton Okubasu and Wareng District youth Officer Dennis Mudhune who hosted the workshop.

Advise to youth on marriage.

Parents should not force their children into marriage when they have not decided. Speaking at Metikei Assembly of God church in Keiyo District Friday Pastor Michael Kataigeny said many divorce cases have happened after parents controlled their children’s relationships.
He says some parents even became the ones who resolve conflicts on their children’s behalf without investigating their causes.
Pastor Kataigeny advised against the move by parents to choose partners for their children saying such a marriage doesn’t last for long.
He says instead parents have to teach their children the principals of marriage while at the same time advising the youth not to run into marriage without consulting their guardians and their spiritual leaders for advice.
Kataigeny is urging the youth looking for partners to pray for someone who is the will of God in order to have a good marriage. He encouraged the youth to stand for the gospel as and be leaders.

Fish FM pays tribute to late EMO chair.

Fish FM Managing Director Reuben Kigame has sent his condolence to family relatives and friends of the late James Bett EMO chairman who died in hospital on the 18^th of this month following a road accident. Kigame hailed Bett as a man who strived to see communities in the Rift Valley affected by the post election violence live in peace. He says they shared a common platform on many occasions while traveling overseas and back home on matters of peace and reconciliation. Paying glowing tribute to the late Bett the Fish FM Managing Director added that the church has lost someone who truly lived the message of the gospel urging all who knew him to emulate his work. EMO is a community based organization with a spiritual and social concern specifically for the Emo communities within and without the Rift Valley.A memorial service for the late Bett is being held today at AIC Church in Eldoret.

North Rift region wheelchair championships soon to be launched.

The North rift wheel chair basket ball and volley ball games are set to be launched on the 15th and 16th of May in Eldoret by the commissioner of sports Gordon Oluoch. According to the Rift valley wheel chair basket ball chairman Joseph Ochieng, teams from Nairobi and the North Rift have confirmed their participation.
Ochieng notes that their aim is to form a strong national team ahead of volley ball championships to be held in July this year in Rwanda.
Among the sponsors expected is Ukwala supermarket Fina bank Wareng county council. Ochieng is also calling on other well wishers to chip to make the event a success.

New services for teachers SACCO

Members of the Wareng Teachers Society SACCO have been assured of getting new services after review to assist them economically.

Wareng Teachers Society SACCO chair John Cheruiyot said plans are on to introduce other products that will see members ask for more loans.

Cheruiyot added that advances will be given to members where they’ll be needed to repay within 42-48 months.

Cheruiyot was speaking Friday evening during the Wareng Teachers SACCO Annual General meeting held in Eldoret.

Fish FM joins partners to donate Easter present.

Fish FM in collaboration with the Christian union of Moi University Annex campus today donated food and non food items to children at the Mwanzo Rescue Centre.The donation from listeners and the Christian union was made to the administration of Mwanzo rescue centre a rehabilitation centre for street children in Eldoret.

Some of the contribution came from Dr. Gikonyo a dentist in town who donated tooth paste and tooth brush.

The Fish FM marketing department also donated maize with other well-wishers sending items like sanitary towels, and clothes.

The management of Fish FM thanks those who contributed towards the worthy cause.

Karua resigns

Justice Minister Martha Karua has called a press conference to announce that she was resigning from her position.Karua says that she could not continue to work in her capacity to bring reforms when her hands were tied.

She said she will rally behind Kenyans to support what is beneficial to them and to also oppose whatever she doesn’t deem fit for the country while in parliament.Karua defended her track record saying that she has always stood for the values she strongly believes in. By….. Pat

Cholera death toll reaches 41

The death toll from a cholera outbreak in the country has risen to 41 as the government stepped up efforts to contain the disease. Public Health Minister Beth Mugo today said that 72 other people suffering from the disease had been admitted to various hospitals in the country. Addressing a press conference, Mugo said the government had spent over 9 Million Shillings in efforts to control the spread of the disease. The Minister said public health officers were on high alert, adding that a total of sixteen districts had been affected by outbreak of the disease. The highest cases of cholera outbreak had earlier been reported in Kisumu East with 229 followed by Machakos with 177.
